TEST: FeiLun FX119, a novel easy 3D microquadcopter

INTRODUCTION

Here is a new “Easy”-3D quadcopter, the Feilun FX119. The brand is more known for their RCboats, but recently they introduced some interesting quadcopters. Let’s have a look to this new toy announced to be a basic 3D model.

BOX CONTENT

null

+ 1 x FeiLun (with a 1S 350mAh LiPo with microLOSI connector)
+ 1 x Transmitter (using 6xAAA batteries not included)
+ 1 x USB charger
+ 4 x Spare props (2 CW, 2 CCW)
+ 4 x Spare propguards

OVERVIEW

The revival of the X-frame with carbon boons!!! It’s a pretty good idea IMHO. Many excellent WLtoys models and other were designed like this and suddently full plastic body models appeared announcing the disparition of the carbon boons.

-Front view

A microquadcopter size, with a X design and 2.5mm carbon boons. Clipsed on top, a basic canopy cover protecting all the electronics.

Prop guards are ultra easy to unclip

Two latteral clip systems lock the plastic conver.

The hub section is fragile IHMO… I hope it won’t suffer of the Eachine H99 prop syndroma.

Arms

2.5mm carbon boons

Motors

7mmx20mm coreless motors are installed.

null

A drop of black hot glue lock motors in their respective housing.

LiPo

A 350mAh 1S LiPo with microLOSI connector, rated 25C as discharge rate.

Disassembling

null

A LT8910 RF chip installed. This model assume relatively slow datarates versus classic RFchips. In practice, it’s a good idea to decrease the datarate to extend the radio range. It’s really useless to handle a fast datarates when in practice, we want to transmite less than 10 channels informations; The 6-axis stabilization is done by the classic MPU 6050C.

null

Transmitter

A basic chassis chassis with not ultra precize stick. 6xAA batteries to feed your transmitter.

null

Two shoulder buttons and two front panel ones. The left shoulder button cycles between the two speed modes. The right one engages a 160degrees flips. If double pressed, a 360 flips is done. The left panel button turns on/off the LEDs and finally the right panel is linked with the Headless mode. To calibrate accelero, push bosth stick in lower outter postions.

FIRST USAGE

The FX119 have some slight delays in the throttle command. The yaw rate well tuned to be not too fast or too slow is identical for the two speed modes. Unfortunatly, I found the pitch & roll rates in expert mode limited. Definitively the FX119 is not an ultra sporty model. Anyway, this machine is super stable, precize and really robust. I really appreciated it for indoors flight. The flips are tight and no problem to fly inverted thanks to automatic inversion of corresponding commands (as soon as the machine is upside down).. Notice, that after a serie of 180 degrees flips, the commands can be inverted…. probably the machine is confused if flying inverted or not. Out of the box, the control range was very acceptable I didn’t observed any drop out in the radius of 30-40m. The flying duration time is in average of 5min before the LVC alarm (flashing LEDs).

CONCLUSIONS

An interesting model from Feilun more adapted mainly for indoors 3D flights IMHO due to the absence of a more faster rate for outdoors agressive flights. The 3D control is easy… and in fine don’t represent any real new flying skill challenge. No major problem with the FX119, the flying duration is correct (5min) as well as the control range control (30-40m). To resume, the FX119 is not an unforggetable model with an outstanding new feature but in another hand, don’t have any weak point. Can be recommended for beginners.

UNBOXING

PROS

+ Beginner’s quadcopter
+ Removable prop guard
+ Robust machine
+ Good radio control range out of the box (~30-40m)
+ Easy 3D
+ 180/360 Flips
+ Removable LiPo
+ Good indoors machine

CONS

– Some small delay in throttle command
– Only two speed modes: not an ultra sporty machine
– Commands potentially inverted after many 180flips.
