TEST: MJX X904, the Hubsan X4 with 3D capacity

null

INTRODUCTION

MJX with their X600 & X800 hexacopters, were two little nice surprizes few months ago. Recently MJX introduced some news models. For example, the MJX X905C is a direct competitor of the Cheerson CX-10C. Here with the MJX X904 we have probably their first easy 3D micromachine, a kind of Hubsan X4 with 3D inversion flight capacities.. Let’s discover this bundle.

BOX CONTENT

null

+ 1 x MJX X904 (with a 1S 380mAh LiPo with microLOSI connector)
+ 1 x Transmitter (using 3xAAA batteries not included)
+ 1 x USB charging cable
+ 4 x Spare props (2 CW, 2 CCW)
+ 1 x Instruction manual (English)

OVERVIEW

A 90mm quadcopter, entering perfectly in the micro size category. The similarities wuth the Hubsan X4 is obvious too …

null

-FRONT VIEW
With builtin prop guards, unfortunatly without the possibility to remove them, the general look is close to the X4 or the excellent JXD 385 (one of my first micro and still one of the best)

-SIDE VIEW
null

-REAR VIEW
null

There is probably a little free room to welcome a longer LiPo, probably with 1cm longer

-UPPER VIEW

-BOTTOM VIEW

LEDs are relelatively bright but not strong enough for night flight, especially white and blue are two tight colors.

null

-WEIGHT
null

Less than 44g for the total weight, relatively lightweight for this category despite the presence of propguards

null

Motors

Prop guard can’t be removed, integrated directly to lower structure part

null

Relatively strong motor some 8mmx20mm coreless brushed motor, not so stronger than 8.5mmx20mm but twice lighter

LiPo

Disassembling

3 scews per arm to remove to split in two the machine

null

The XN297 is installed on front. A Linear antenna is here too. It’s strongly advise to perform the antenna mod: drill a small hole on the top of the canopy and let the antenna pass through. Motors are directly soldered on the PCB.

Two large shoulder buttons can be found as well as a central feature selection button in the middle of the row of button. For shoulder buttons,. In practice, each of them can :
i) be short pressed
ii) long pressed
iii) work in combinaison of the feature selection buttons
So in theory a total of 4 functions per shoulder button.

By default, a red LEDs is turned on.Tthe left shoulder button select the 180/360 flips when briefly pressed and engages the headless mode when long pressed.. If immediatly, you short press directly again on it, you engage RTH. To release RTH either move the forward/backward direction or briefly press again the left shoulder bottton. The right shoulder is here to perform flips but you have to hold on pressed to flip the quad. Good news, the X904 binds the former MJX X800 radio…. and by consequence is also DeviationTX compatible

UNBOXING & QUICK ANALYSIS & FIRST DEMO FLIGHT

FIRST USAGE

The X904 is nice flyer with two well tuned speed mode. The yaw rate is not too fast, not too slow. Flips are nice and it’s good to be able to select the type of flips. 180 flips will invert the machine. In this situation, all commands are inverted for you… It’s definitively an easy 3D model far from the difficult XK X100 for example. Even with the 8mmx20mm motors, I found the X904 don’t offer powerful vertical pumps in both directions. With 3D flyers, 3D props unfortunatly can’t be as efficient as non 3D props in the same direction. A direct consequence is relatively poor flight duration, 4mins maximum… it’s short. Finally, I was disapointed by the control range. First drops out can appear from 20m-25m. The anntenna mod is a must to do with this machine. Of course, super range can obtained via a DeviationTX compatible machine.
I regret the non-possibility to uninstall prop guards to save maybe 3-4g….With such size, it’s a lot… Of course, you can cut them but no possible way bacl in this case.

CONCLUSIONS

If the X904 is a nice and easy 3D machine with two nice speed modes, the limited flight time and control range are two major limiting points. I can’t recommend this machine if your are not sure to perform the antenna mod. It’s a pity for the success of this machine.

PROS

+ Speed modes well tuned
+ Radio compatible with MJX X800
+ DeviationTX compatible
+ 180/360 flips selection
+ Easy 3D

CONS

– 20-25m of control range
– 3-4 min of flying duration
– Lack of vertical power
– Prop guard can’t be removed
– Tiny Transmitter
